Building a Strong Foundation: Choose IJʿ for Years 5 and 6

Students attending Years 5 and 6 at IJʿ will have spent two years adapting and developing skills to ready them for the high school environment and learning spaces. At Stuartholme Year 5 and 6 students will have the opportunity to forge friendships, develop a deep knowledge of the Stuartholme charism and ethos and developed an understanding of the type of learning all students will be required to work with, in Year 7 and into their senior schooling years.
Mr Brendan Downes, Director of Primary, offers 4 reasons why it is beneficial and impactful for students to start in year 5 and 6 at IJʿ.
- Creating active learners by building skills that focus on critical thinking, problem solving and creativity.
Research tells us that now more than ever, our students need a voice. In an all-girl environment, there is a greater opportunity for the girls to be heard (Robinson, et al., 2021). The focus at the heart of Stuartholme Primary/Junior School is for the students to be active in their learning with a focus on the development of critical thinking skills, problem solving and creativity. Units are designed with a STEM focus where students are challenged to solve real world problems. Students will also reflect on their learning and be able to articulate their strengths as a learner and the areas they need to work towards. By understanding the purpose behind the work, they complete, our Junior School students are more motivated and develop the self-direction and independence to be successful in secondary school.

As a smaller school with its own precinct, (only 100 students), the Junior School students at Stuartholme have the advantage of a small school education where every student is valued while enjoying the benefits of incredible facilities. Our students have the opportunity of learning in a beautiful bush-setting among the treetops of Mount Coot-tha and have access to 21-hectares and sporting facilities on-site. Enhancing their education even further, they will also have access to the use of science laboratory resources, dedicated music rooms and the theatre which allows the Junior School students the best opportunities to learn.
- An extensive range of Co-Curricular opportunities.
From sport to social justice to the arts, the extensive co-curricular program has an offering for every student. The sporting program for our Year 5 and 6 students includes netball, water polo, tennis, equestrian and a Learn to Row Camp and will continue to expand as other Catholic girls schools introduce Years 5 and 6. Other co-curricular offerings include speech and drama, art club, drama club, choir, music and social justice.
- Specialist Teachers here to support each and every student.
Specialist lessons for Years 5 and 6 Art, Drama, Digital Technologies, Languages, Music and Health and Physical Education. Stuartholme secondary teachers take these lessons, many who are leaders in their field and have been recognised for their expertise.
